Why paper bills are still a data-entry problem
A kirana shop, a hardware supplier, a tempo driver, a printing press — a large share of Indian small-business paperwork is still a numbered pad, a carbon sheet and a ballpoint pen. Those bills are legally fine and commercially normal. They are only a problem at the point where someone has to turn thirty of them into a spreadsheet before a GST filing or a client reimbursement.
Generic OCR fails here because it treats the page as prose. It returns a wall of text with no idea which number was a quantity, which was a rate and which was a line total. Get a better photo, get a better table
Extraction quality is decided before the file is ever uploaded. Four habits do most of the work:
- Flatten the page. A curled bill bends the columns, and bent columns are the single most common cause of a value landing in the wrong cell.
- Fill the frame. Crop to the bill. Desk, keyboard and hands in shot cost you resolution where you need it most.
- Diffuse light, no flash. Flash creates a hotspot that erases exactly the faint pen strokes you were hoping to recover.
- One bill per capture. Two bills in one frame invites the model to merge two tables into one.
Frequently asked questions
Can AI really read handwritten bills?
Yes, within limits. Modern vision models read clear handwriting on a flat, well-lit page reliably. Populate.ai scores every cell it extracts and highlights anything below 90% confidence so you only check the doubtful fields instead of re-reading the whole bill. Cursive, overlapping digits and carbon-copy bills are harder — expect to correct a few cells rather than none.
What file types can I upload?
Photos taken on your phone (JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC), scans, and multi-page PDFs. You can also dictate line items aloud if the paper is unreadable. On the free tier each file can be up to 15 MB, and up to 15 MB in total per upload session.
Does it handle Hindi, Marathi, Tamil or mixed-script bills?

Will the totals be checked?
